The building was a two-story glass monster, made entirely of what appeared to be tinted windows. It was one of those sleek looking buildings that made you feel like you needed to be wearing pantyhose just to pick up their garbage. Unfortunately, my most conservative outfit had consisted of a button-down shirt and a pair of jeans. They were nice jeans, but jeans nonetheless. All of a sudden, I felt like a panhandler going in to ask for some spare change. As I entered the lobby, the lady behind the counter gave me a look I didn’t quite care for.
“May I help you, Miss?” she asked, the words rolling off of her tongue with ease as she attempted to suppress her obvious distaste for my appearance.
“Yes, I was hoping to get an employment application,” I said, “I’ve just moved into town and I was told that you might be hiring processors.” I breathed a silent sigh of relief at having been able to find the correct terminology on the spur of the moment.
“Processors, let me check for you,” she said and turned quickly to type something into her computer. “Well, yes, we are looking for processors right now. Let me get you an application.”
Maybe she wasn’t so snooty after all. She could have easily told me that they weren’t hiring for anything and to take my hobo ass back to where I had come from, but she didn’t. I watched as she walked to the back of her work area, opened a file cabinet drawer and extracted an application form. Her heels clicked on the marble floor as she made her way back to the desk and handed me the form.
“Here you are, feel free to take this with you and mail it back in at your convenience,” she said without smiling.
“I’d rather just fill it out here if that’s ok,” I said, smiling as widely as I could without hurting myself. Her face flushed a bright red and she gulped before she spoke.
“Sure, of course, you can do that if you like,” she said, indicating a table at the other side of the lobby. “There are phone books on the table over there. Just bring it back to me when you have finished.”
The winner of the What Would Rona Do contest is Steven Knight of White Oak, WV! Steven's entry really captured the kind of day that Rona would probably have on her 40th birthday. He suggested that after a day of failed attempts at relaxing and pampering herself that she return home to find a small surprise party waiting for her. Great idea!
Steven has won a copy of Keeping the Faith and a $20 Barnes & Noble gift card! Congratulations to Steven!
